When I tell people I work for a summer accommodations operation in a university residence, they often assume that I help provide summer housing to students. When I explain that the residence becomes more of a hotel during the summer months, the general reaction is surprise; many people don’t realize that choosing to stay on a university campus is an affordable and unique alternative to pricey hotels or dingy hostel dormitories. Once the initial surprise wears off, there’s usually yet another set of misunderstandings: “Isn’t it dirty?” “You have to share a washroom? Ew!” “Isn’t there constant partying and noise?” If you’ve never stayed on campus as a tourist, you might have the same concerns; after all, aren’t all university dorms noisy, rat-infested party zones? The answer, of course, is no. In fact, on-campus accommodations offer clean, affordable rooms and a variety of amenities for every type of traveller. Whether you’re a backpacker hitch hiking your way across Canada or a family on summer vacation, here’s what to expect when you stay on campus here at Memorial.
We don’t offer five-star luxury, but we do guarantee five-star service
What we lack in luxury, we make up for in customer service. Our summer staff is made up of enthusiastic, friendly students who are proud ambassadors of Memorial University and St. John’s. Looking for the best fish and chips in town? We know which way to point you. Wondering where the locals go to cool down on a hot summer day? No problem. Need an extra blanket or a hand getting your luggage to your room? That’s what we’re here for. We may not have the fanciest amenities, but we do know how to make our customers smile.

Our rooms aren’t fancy, but they are clean, comfy, and secure
There’s nothing fancy about a university dorm room, but the essentials are there. Our rooms come simply furnished with beds, desks, and wardrobe space, as well as basic bed and bath linens. We can’t promise you a feather duvet, but we can assure you that your room will be clean and in good repair. If you choose a dorm-style room with a shared washroom, don’t be afraid! Our common washrooms are clean and bright with several shower stalls, toilets, and sinks. You can also rest easy knowing that our buildings are secured 24/7, and that campus security and our front desk staff are always available. Our staff are happy to help you with anything you need to get comfy- if you’d like another pillow or blanket, simply drop by the front desk- no matter the hour!

Being on campus means staying in a convenient location with access to unique amenities
Universities offer a variety of facilities that hotels would not usually have. You can check out the library on a rainy day, head to the food court for a bite to eat, browse the bookstore for a souvenir, or take advantage of complimentary access to our world-class fitness facilities and classes. Hosting a conference or meeting? Memorial offers a huge variety of classrooms, lecture halls, and banquet spaces to choose from. We’re also ideally situated between the hustle and bustle of downtown and the serenity of a large park and campground; you can choose between a day of shopping or a day of exploring a scenic trail. Being on campus means you might be able to experience something you weren’t expecting, like a mid-day yoga class just minutes from your room or a close encounter with a newly-hatched duckling in Burton’s Pond.

It’s all about the experience
When you choose to stay on campus, you choose a special kind of travel experience. Our staff and guests come from a huge variety of backgrounds, and staying on campus offers a unique environment where getting to know the people behind the desk, as well as your fellow tourists, is the norm. We love to chat with our guests to find out where they’re coming from and why they chose St. John’s. By the end of your stay, we’ll probably know you by name! It’s also easy to get to know your fellow travellers; communal breakfast makes it easy to get together and share experiences and stories. We like to think that the people with the most interesting travel stories often choose to stay with us; we’ve seen cross-country cyclists and backpackers, visiting professors and students, retired couples taking their Volkswagen van on the road, and families looking for a unique vacation destination. We love to see our guests getting to know each other over a coffee and a bagel, and wishing each other well as they continue on their journeys.
Overall, staying on campus is a great choice for travellers in search of a unique and personal experience rather than luxury amenities and a five-star rating. If you choose to stay with us, we promise you outstanding customer service, clean and secure accommodations, and excellent value for your dollar. Book with us today to see what we mean; we don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
